The number of caesarean sections as a method of delivery is increasing. But, caesarean section is not always a medical necessity. More and more mothers deliberately choose this method of giving birth in our country and in the world. Caesarean section – this is really a good alternative to natural childbirth for many first time mothers. It is safe, easy and controlled way. And the only mark left from the cut is a small scar on the mother’s stomach. If it’s that simple, maybe everyone should choose this method of delivery?
Not really. First, it is worth noting that caesarean section is not a physiological way of childbirth. This should be understood by first time mothers who believe that the procedure on request is one of the right options for the birth. And this is not only the opinion of neonatologists. Gynecologists also do not recommend caesarean section without medical indications. Why?
When caesarean section is applied
Let’s start from the beginning. Caesarean section is a procedure that is provided to save the life of the child or mother.
There are cases when the emergency department a bleeding woman is brought with a falling umbilical cord or placenta. In this case, the incision should be made within a few minutes and there is nothing to discuss. Caesarean section is also used when there is heart dysfunction or symptoms of hypoxia. These are emergency cases, and their list is certainly not limited to the given examples.
It also happens that women cannot give birth naturally, for example, due to the spine or pelvis injuries, serious eye defects, changes in the central nervous system or when the child is too big. In such situations, the decision on caesarean section should be carefully considered.
However, it seems that some women take it too easy. They do not have a full understanding of the consequences for the child’s and her ow future life.
Why women without medical indications decide to have a caesarean section
Often they are afraid of the risks associated with natural childbirth. They say that unlike natural childbirth, the caesarean section scenario is predictable. Such mothers are sure that everything will pass properly after the cut.
This belief that natural childbirth can take a dangerous turn indicates that women do not trust medicine and medics. But now we have reliable methods of monitoring the child’s condition, including the assessment of heart function. Experienced doctors can take care of the safety of the child and mother.
Another reason is that many women are simply afraid to give birth. How to deal with it? If the first time mother is not able to cope with this fear herself or with the help of relatives, then probably this task is for psychologists and special schools for pregnant women. Fighting the fear is definitely worth it, because the decision taken about caesarean section can have a great impact on the life of the child’s, her lives and the subsequent pregnancies.
What’s wrong with a caesarean section
Let’s start with the fact that uterine contractions are a natural signal to terminate pregnancy. This is a sign that the child is preparing to come into the world. Starts a complex biochemical process, during which the body releases a number of substances such as thyroid hormones and adrenal glands, catecholamine. For simplicity, they are responsible for the condition of the fetus. A newborn needs to properly prepare for an ectopic life.
One more very important thing in the process of natural childbirth is pushing the baby through the birth canal. During this “journey” his lungs prepare to breathe. In the womb lungs are not needed, and they are filled with the fluid. It must come out to let the baby breathe after birth. When the child go through the birth canal, the pelvis squeezes his chest, squeezing 80 percent of the fluid. 20 percent goes to the lymph vessels and veins. Due to this, after the birth the lungs will be able to properly expand and be filled with air.
Is a child born by caesarean section very different in this respect? This depends on whether the procedure was performed before or after the appearance of uterine contractions.
A child born through a caesarean section without contractions take it much harder. 100 percent of the fluid from the alveoli should leave on its own in the tissue. This lasts much longer than in a physiologically born child. As a result, newborns after cesarean section often have problems with breathing. This may be a temporary increase in the breathing, a set of respiratory disorders and pulmonary hypertension. Often there are no complications, sometimes they are light, sometimes very heavy. You can’t predict that.
The situation is even worse in the so-called premature babies. Neonatologists are very afraid of the situation when a woman at 37 weeks of pregnancy cannot stand and wants to give birth here and now, requires a cesarean section as soon as possible. But the procedure of cesarean section before the end of pregnancy is unfavorable for the child!
Respiratory disorders, regardless of the birth time, are usually accompanied by more or less severe circulatory disorders. Remember that the respiratory and circulatory systems are interconnected. If the alveoli do not expand, the surrounding blood vessels will not work properly.
Based on numerous studies, we know that not only premature babies, but also full-term newborns after cesarean section are more likely to have complications such as sepsis or hypoglycemia. There has also been an increase in the number of deaths in this group. That’s what the statistics say. The practice of neonatologists confirms that children born naturally rarely require complex medical procedures and, as a result, go home faster.
What about the contact of the newborn with the mother after the operation? The first hours of life on the mother’s breast are very important for the child’s immunity. When a newborn lies on his mother and calms down after stressful events, he gets bacteria from his mother. As a result, a protective barrier is created on the skin of the newborn.
No less important for the development of immunity is the passage through the birth canal of the mother. The child is in contact with the bacterial flora of the vagina. While a child born by caesarean section, is born in a sterile environment. What are the consequences? It is no coincidence that children after cesarean section often suffer from asthma and allergies.
In the first minutes after birth, when the child is applied to the breast, he gets a little colostrum. These few drops contain most immunoglobulins (antibodies) and proteins, as well as vitamins, anti-inflammatory factors and beneficial bacteria that fill the child’s digestive system. It is difficult to overestimate their importance for the future of immunity and metabolism of the baby.
Meanwhile, the first moments after the caesarean section do not involve the production of colostrum. A baby is usually separated from his mother. The woman is tired and under the influence of painkillers. Recovery will take some time.
And in future, children after caesarean section experience more difficulties with the beginning of breastfeeding. Further breastfeeding, especially in the early days, often requires more effort. Many women after cesarean section is not even recommended, although many mothers manage to feed after the surgery.
Of course, caesarean section has advantages. In addition, it can save the lives of mother and child. However, do not blindly go under the knife, perceiving such an operation as a panacea and salvation from the fear of natural childbirth.
